There are a wide variety of conditions that can cause cognitive changes, including:
Many of these conditions also co-occur with depression and anxiety, leading to even greater thinking impact.
Some of the most common thinking problems after a brain injury or due to neurological illness include:
· Problems with attention (examples: distractibility, trouble sustaining attention)
· Difficulty with learning and memory (examples: forgetting events and conversations, misplacing objects)
· Poor executive functioning (examples: planning, problem-solving, organization, prioritization, and decision-making).
A detailed initial assessment of your cognitive functioning guides the course of the rehabilitation program.
Following the intake assessment, Dr. Brandon Stewart provides evidence-based interventions that foster skill development in the areas of behavioral management, planning, organization, prioritization, attention, memory, executive functioning, and brain-healthy habits, among others.
It usually takes 7-8 treatment sessions following the initial assessment to complete the program, with additional maintenance sessions available as needed.
Absolutely! There is a large body of research that proves these evidence-based techniques and healthy brain habits result in significant improvements in thinking.
While not targeted directly, Cognitive Rehab can also improve general health and mental well-being (examples: by improving sleep, physical and mental stimulation, and diet/nutrition).
Cognitive Rehabilitation is a structured approach to help you strengthen thinking skills and feel more capable in daily life. By understanding how different parts of your brain function—such as attention, memory, and problem-solving—you’ll learn strategies to overcome specific cognitive challenges. This approach, called *metacognition*, involves:
Through this program, you’ll create habits that physically reshape the brain—a process called neuroplasticity, which means your brain can change and improve with practice. This leads to both immediate benefits and lasting improvements in cognitive health!
Cognitive rehab works best for individuals who:
Cognitive rehab is minimally effective for individuals who 1) have severe memory problems (e.g., from certain dementias like Alzheimer’s disease) that prevent learning of skills and strategies, 2) are not fully motivated to engage with rehabilitation, such as individuals who do not have buy-in for treatment, 3) have low insight and awareness into their thinking problems, as awareness building is a time-intensive intervention that requires separate treatment, or 4) have significant psychiatric concerns (e.g., ongoing suicidality, severe depression with severe lack of motivation) or substance use disorders that pose as a barrier to continual treatment progress.
Due to the potentially reduced effectiveness of treatment, Dr. Stewart reviews every new Cognitive Rehab request carefully to ensure a good match for the program.
We currently provide cognitive rehab services through our private pay option and injured workers through workers’ compensation.
Yes! Cognitive rehabilitation services are suitable for both in-person and video teleconferencing appointments.
Due to licensing laws, you must be physically located in the State of Idaho at the time of your appointment to participate. Our telehealth service uses Zoom, which is HIPAA compliant and secure.
The initial 60-minute intake and evaluation appointment is $375. Depending on the complexity of your case, two intake evaluation appointments may be required.
Follow-up appointments (50-minutes each) are $225. The exact number of treatment sessions required depends on the complexity of your case and ability to maintain a regular schedule, which promotes faster recovery.
Our services are offered through private-pay or workers’ compensation only; however, depending on your insurance benefits, you might be eligible to use your out-of-network benefits.
We can provide you with a SuperBill to submit to your insurance company upon request.
*Note: Medicare does NOT allow for any out-of-network reimbursement.
We do not currently have a sliding fee scale available.
Note: Due to the number of requests we receive, please allow up to 2 business days for us to respond.
