A neuropsychological evaluation is a specialized, clinical assessment of brain function. It examines a range of cognitive domains—including memory, attention, processing speed, language, and executive function. This allows neuropsychologists to identify patterns that could indicate an underlying condition.

The evaluation produces objective data that can clarify a diagnosis, inform medical decisions, document cognitive capacity for legal or estate planning, and guide care planning for patients and families. It also can rule out certain conditions.

What to Expect During a Neuropsychological Evaluation

The comprehensive evaluation process at Idaho Neuropsychology typically includes:

A 15-minute phone consultation to review history, answer questions, and confirm that a neuropsychological evaluation is the right next step.

Dr. Black will advise as to which type of evaluation (Rapid or Comprehensive) is best given the patient’s specific situation and needs.

A diagnostic interview. This is a critical first step for all evaluations.

Rapid Consult: conducted in the same visit as testing and feedback. The interview lasts approximately one hour.
Comprehensive Evaluation: typically conducted the day prior to testing. The interview lasts approximately two hours.

A comprehensive exam. This is a structured assessment session conducted in Boise, with scoring and interpretation of all assessment data conducted by Dr. Black.

Rapid Consult: approximately 40 minutes, completed during the same visit as the interview and feedback session.
Comprehensive Evaluation: conducted a day or more after the interview, this evaluation is four to six hours, including breaks.

A feedback session with Dr. Black to review findings, discuss what the results mean, and outline recommendations.

Two reports: a comprehensive, official report for your medical record, written primarily with your medical team in mind, and a second, easy-to-understand executive summary for patients, their caregivers, and loved ones. This personal report is presented in clear, understandable language and includes a roadmap of next steps.

A follow-up session with Dr. Black to review care progress and ensure you’re on track. This can be done via telehealth for Idaho residents.

Idaho Neuropsychology will recommend which evaluation is best suited for a patient’s needs based upon case complexity, questions to be answered, and other relevant factors.

Starting the Process from East Idaho

Patients from Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Pocatello, or anywhere in Eastern Idaho can start the process with a brief phone consultation before their in-person evaluation in Boise. This 15-minute conversation, known as a provider alignment call, gives Dr. Black the opportunity to review medical history, answer questions, and determine the best next steps. Should you move forward with an evaluation, the interview and feedback appointments can be completed via telehealth; only the testing itself requires an in-office visit.

With telehealth options for the consultation and feedback sessions, most patients need to make only one trip for the in-person assessment.

Who is a neuropsychological evaluation appropriate for?

A neuropsychological evaluation is appropriate for adults with memory concerns, cognitive changes, attention or organization difficulties, or any condition affecting brain function. It is also used for those needing documented cognitive capacity assessment for legal, estate planning, or medical purposes.

How long does the evaluation take?

There is a 2-hour interview, typically the day before the formal testing session, which itself lasts about six hours and includes breaks. You will receive initial evaluation feedback about a week later in a 90-minute call, as well as an optional, highly recommended 60-minute feedback session 3–4 weeks after your evaluation.

The Rapid Neuropsych Consult is about three hours. The full process for the comprehensive evaluation, from initial consultation to report delivery, generally takes about four weeks.

How much do evaluations cost?

The Rapid Neuropsych Consult is offered at a fixed price of $1,750.

The comprehensive neuropsych evaluation is $5,500. 

Do you accept insurance?

No. Idaho Neuropsychology is a self-pay practice. Payment is due at the time of service. Some patients submit a “super bill” to their insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement, though Idaho Neuropsychology does not bill insurance directly and cannot guarantee reimbursement.

Important: Medicare does not allow for out of network reimbursement.

How soon can I be seen?

Most patients are seen within two to four weeks of contact. This is much faster than the four-to-six-month wait times common at insurance-based neuropsychology practices in Idaho.

Can I start with a telehealth consultation before traveling to Boise?

Yes. For patients coming from East Idaho and the surrounding region, an initial phone consultation is available. This gives you an opportunity to speak with Dr. Black, review your history, and confirm that a neuropsychological evaluation is the right next step before making the trip to Boise.
